CIVINET Greece-Cyprus, as an official body of the European Commission, serving as the National Network of CIVITAS and a National Multiplier of the EU Urban Mobility Observatory, specialises in attracting European funding for the implementation of innovative projects in Greek and Cypriot cities.
For this reason, from its first year of establishment until today, it has been steadily involved in European projects, with an increasing level of engagement and a continuously strengthened role.
The first projects it participated in were two Interreg MED projects, REMEDIO and LOCATIONS. In these projects, through its role as an External Expert, it conducted studies and organised participatory planning processes for the cities of Thessaloniki and Limassol.
For Thessaloniki, it proposed a series of smart city solutions to accompany the integrated regeneration of Vasilissis Olgas Avenue, while for Limassol it developed a low-carbon mobility strategy for cruise tourists visiting the city.
At the same time, it supported 18 Greek local authorities in participating in the six-month SUMP Learning Programmes of the CIVITAS SUMPs-Up project, certifying its own staff regarding the knowledge required for the development and implementation of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs).
Subsequently, CIVINET Greece-Cyprus served as the role of Work Package Leader in two additional INCIRCLE projects, INCIRCLE and Urban Transports.

Within INCIRCLE, the beneficiary Greek-speaking local authorities included the Municipality of Rethymno, the Municipality of Larnaca, the Region of Crete and the Region of Attica. In addition to serving as the overall communication manager for the project, CIVINET acted as a technical advisor to these authorities and ultimately delivered, completely free of charge, a comprehensive Circular Tourism Strategy for the Regional Unit of Attica Islands, and organised a related three-day event on the island of Aegina.
In Urban Transports, the beneficiary municipalities were Pallini, Larissa and Larnaca, supported through the Mentoring Program organised by CIVINET as the project’s capitalisation manager. CIVINET also contributed to the publication and translation of four Policy Guidelines (soft mobility, e-mobility, mobility and climate crisis, mobility and tourism), implemented an e-course entitled “Mobility and Tourism in the Mediterranean”, and organised the project’s final international conference, the “Mediterranean Mobility Forum“.

Towards the end of these projects, CIVINET undertook the implementation of the Challenge My City project of EIT Urban Mobility for the municipalities of Larissa and Heraklion, Crete. Within this framework, it installed and pilot-operated 13 micromobility hubs (smart parking stations) for private bikes and e-scooters in the city of Heraklion.
Currently, CIVINET is implementing the SPINE (Horizon Europe), SMARTMOBAIR (Interreg IPA Adrion) και EcoZani (European Urban Initiative). Within the CIVITAS and Mission project SPINE, CIVINET is responsible for fostering synergies with other EU projects and initiatives, while providing technical support to the Municipality of Heraklion for the implementation of a series of smart mobility applications.
In SMARTMOBAIR, it serves as the project’s communication manager and supports the Municipality of Rethymno in the installation and operation of smart parking stations for e-bikes and e-scooters.
In EcoZani, it serves as WP Leader for the capitalisations of project knowledge and experience, trains staff of municipalities in Western Macedonia, provides mentoring services to regional start-ups, manages the creation of a network of cities with sustainable carnivals, and provides technical support to the Municipality of Kozani in conducting studies and developing sustainable mobility solutions for its traditional Carnival, with the potential for year-round application.

Over the years, CIVINET Greece-Cyprus has also operated as a beneficiary organisation within the CIVITAS network and its funded projects. In this context, it has participated in CIVITAS SATELLITE, CIVITAS ELEVATE and CIVITAS MUSE projects, and with the related resources it established and operates the CIVINET Greece-Cyprus Digital Forum (facebook group), implemented numerous training and capacity-building activities (workshops and webinars), organised two international conferences (1st & 2nd CIVINET Forum)), conducted a multi-month Mobility Academy in cooperation with CIVINET Slo-Cro-SEE, published the guide for Sustainable Island Mobility Plan, and participated in international events such as the CIVITAS Forum, SUMPs Conference, POLIS Conference and Urban Mobility Days, among others.
Finally, it has also participated in smaller roles in Horizon 2020 projects HIREACH (take up group), SIMPLA (national replicator) και CIVITAS PARK4SUMP (workshop organizer).
Through its overall engagement in European and national funding, since its founding, and having received only €150,000 from annual local authority membership fees, CIVINET has leveraged €7,750,000 for Greek local authorities.
