OUTTA CLIMATE FESTIVAL: Keeping school streets safe through culture

OUTTA LONG TRANS

An innovative programme is coming to Greece on the initiative of CIVINET Greece-Cyprus, with the support and co-financing of the Green Fund and a number of municipalities-members of the Network. The “Outta Climate Festival” campaign tries to link the climate crisis with road safety, vulnerable social groups and culture, using asphalt art, as well as other forms of art.

The asphalt art technique is mainly a street art technique implemented on asphalt, trying to attract the attention of drivers, reduce speed and sometimes change the design and operation of roads for the benefit of pedestrians, cyclists and vulnerable social groups (children, elderly, disabled, young parents, etc.). This methodology has been implemented in the USA for the last few years and has already achieved excellent results in over 64 cities.

The Outta Climate Festivals will consist of morning “asphalt art” interventions outside schools and an afternoon cultural programme in central public spaces in each participating city. So far, the programme involves the Region of Attica, Agios Dimitrios, Vari Voula Vouliagmeni, Heraklion Crete, Karpenisi and Veria.

The implementation of the asphalt art interventions will be carried out by the internationally renowned artist Soteur, with the active participation of the students of each school. The afternoon cultural programme will include student bands, as well as high quality performances for adults by the Jazz Solidarity Network artists.

Outta Climate Festival’s first events will take place on 22 September (Agios Dimitrios) and on 10 November (Vari Voula Vouliagmeni).
